The fish hook carvings ( ' Hei-Matau in Maori ) are symbols of power and authority which are held in great reverence by the indigenous Maori people of New Zealand .
The carved Matau represents the bonding of family, symbolizes good luck, good health and long life. It is also considered a good luck charm by travelers over water such as boaters, fishermen and surfers.

Every Maori carving has a very special significance or represents a story in its design.
The pre-European Maori had no written language so tribal history was recorded using many forms of beautiful crafts ranging from basket and cloth weaving to intricate bone, wood, and jade carvings.
They believe each bone carving has a very special feel , blending with your body over time and taking on part of your spirit to become something very special, what they call a 'Taonga'.
These unisex pendants are hand carved by artisans from Ox bone following traditional Maori designs and the adjustable necklace is made from waxy cotton and can be worn from 30-55 cms (12" to 22" )
To adjust necklace length, please hold pendant in one hand and with the other, place your thumb over both knots on the necklace and slide them in the opposite direction from the pendant.
Each pendant comes neatly presented in a hessian bag and make great gifts for family and friends.
